xpointer support?

Martin Honnen-3

According to https://developer.mozilla.org/en/XML_in_Mozilla, Mozilla
supports some XPointer schemes like the element scheme and some API too.
A test case linked to is
https://bug182323.bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=119333. When I
try links like
https://bug182323.bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=119333#element%28/1/2%29
with Firefox 3.6 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US;
rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 Firefox/3.6.13 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729;
.NET4.0E)) the browser does not scroll to the element in the xpointer.
Hitting any of the "JS" butttons on the test case displays an error

[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80040154
(NS_ERROR_FACTORY_NOT_REGISTERED) [nsIDOMXMLDocument.evaluateXPointer]"
  nsresult: "0x80040154 (NS_ERROR_FACTORY_NOT_REGISTERED)"  location:
"JS frame ::
https://bug182323.bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=119333 :: xp ::
line 56"  data: no]

Has the xpointer stuff been removed or abandonded?

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=182323#c35 also asks that.

1)  There are definitely plans/proposals to kill it off: see
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=457102 and
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=388704

2)  It looks like it was effectively disabled when we moved to
mercurial, because the actual implementation lived in
extensions/xmlextras and wasn't actually imported into mozilla-central.

I think given that it's been several years and people are just noticing
it's gone, we should go ahead and remove the pretense of supporting it
(as well as the various code internally that claims to be trying to use
xpointer).  Jonas?
