support for Mac OS X 10.6 - 10.8 ending, tracking bug

»Q«
Excerpted from a post by B. Smedberg, who's in charge of the process
of getting rid of OS X 10.6 - 10.8 support in Firefox:

As of this point, I expect that Firefox 48 will still run on
10.6-10.8 and the first release to drop support will be Fx49.

If anyone wants to follow along, the tracking bug for the various
pieces of client, updater, website, and SUMO changes are being tracked
  in bug 1255589.

Assuming they meet the expectation, Firefox 45 ESR will be the last to
run on those OSes.  EOL for 45 ESR is next March.

Aside: Why aren't OS X versions named after kitty cats any more?  Is
that something that changed after Jobs kicked off?

They ran out of species of cats?

Although I don't recall Black Panther. 10.3 was Panther.

Aside: That is an interesting newsgroup. 😊

The latest one is called "Yosemite".  Didn't Firefox versions have
national park names for a while?

It was bad enough when it was just Debian tagging every release with a
cutesy name.  Between Debian, Apple, Google (Android), and the worst of
all, Ubuntu, I can't keep any of the cutesy names straight any more
(not that I actually need to).

It is!  I have no tolerance for lurking in irc or reading irc logs, so
m.d.platform is the closest I will get to seeing what's going on in a
lot of cases.  Smedberg's m.o. seems a lot like Brendan Eich's was,
IMO a Good Thing; I guess they learned a lot from each other.

I don't remember. Not looking that one up.

I lurk on IRC a lot during the week, since some of the channels I
auto-join aren't logged. There was a post on logging all channels awhile
back IIRC. I think it was left unresolved.

Lurking on IRC without logging, why not. Some interesting channels of
that kind? Not that I know anything about IRC at the moment. :)

When I'm logged onto IRC using Thunderbird,  the channels are logged in
Thunderbird, but not all are publicly logged at <http://logs.glob.uno/>.

Although many Mozilla IRC channels are logged, I would be interested in
seeing #planning, #platform, #relman, #release-drivers, and #tbdrivers
publicly logged.

They ran out of names of cats, and presumably did not want to use

Ran out of names? No Bobcat, Cheetah, Clouded Leopard, Puma, etc. :P

Cheetah was OS X 10.0.  Puma was 10.1.  Bobcats are too small for
something as wonderful as OS X ;) and I don't know how big Clouded
Leopards are.  They also never used 'Lynx', maybe because Lynx are too
small or because a browser already had that name.

Ah. Well, use the smaller kitties then to keep the theme going. ;P

Didn't the big kitty names them stop after Steve Jobs died?

That was the question I asked to kick off this subthread, but no answer
has appeared.  I was curious and thought someone might happen to know,
but I'm not curious enough to find out myself by plotting a timeline
of version names versus Steve Jobs deaths.
