"Failed to load overlay from chrome" in Thunderbird 60

wilsonrob867
Hi,

We are having a add-on which is XUL based, and its working fine pre-thunderbird 60. However, from Thunderbird 60 on wards, I am able to install binary component. But, we are getting following error: Do you any idea on this?

Failed to load overlay from chrome://xyz/content/xyzOverlay.xul.

We have this in chrome.manifest. While loading this XUL, I beleiev we have some issues in TB 60.

Thanks kindly in advance.

Regards,
Wilson.

XUL add-ons are still fully supported in TB 60 as long as they have
followed all the interface changes listed here:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird/Add-ons_Guide_57

That list might not be exhaustive though since we only listed the
interface changes we had to follow in TB's own code. We need more
information or the entire add-on for debugging (if someone can find the
time).

In my own add-on I have
overlay chrome://messenger/content/messengercompose/messengercompose.xul
chrome://thunderHTMLedit/content/thunderHTMLedit-composer.xul
and that works fine.

However, if depends what you're overlaying. The Mozilla platform
discontinued overlay support at mozilla63, so we started early
eliminating overlays from TB. So if you are overlaying an overlay we
have removed, then it won't work for you any more. To be able to tell
that, we at least need the 'overlay' lines from your manifest.

For example, msgCompSMIMEOverlay.xul was already removed in TB 60
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1444606). You can find all
the ones we removed via the meta-bug
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1444468). The first six
(1444596, 1444598, 1444601, 1444606, 1444620, 1444634) are already
removed in TB 60.

Jörg.

Hello Jörg,

Thanks a lot for your response.

Our overlay we are using is - mailWindowOverlay.xul. Form the bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1446609, I believe this overlay will be removed soon or its already removed.

Here is our manifest snippet:

overlay chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.xull chrome://xyz/content/xyz.xul
content xyz jar:chrome/xyz_3.jar!/content/xyz/
content xyz jar:chrome/xyz_3.jar!/content/xyz/ contentaccessible=yes
skin xyz classic jar:chrome/xyz_3.jar!/content/xyz/skin/
style chrome://global/content/customizeToolbar.xul chrome://xyz/skin/xyz.css

And here is our xul code snippet:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<?xml-stylesheet href="chrome://xyz/skin/xyz.css" type="text/css"?>
<!DOCTYPE window SYSTEM "chrome://xyz/content/xyzOverlay.dtd">

<overlay xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul">
<script type="application/x-javascript" src="mail-xyz.js"/>
<script type="application/x-javascript" src="mail-xyz_3.js"/>

<popup id="threadPaneContext">
        ...
</popup>
<popup id="mailContext">
        ...
</popup>
  <toolbox id="mail-toolbox" class="toolbox-top" mode="full">
    <command id="cmd_Mark" oncommand="xyz.markAs()"/>
   ...
    <keyset>
        ...
    </keyset>
    <toolbarpalette id="MailToolbarPalette">
      <toolbaritem id="xyz-items">
        <deck id="xyz-deck">

      </toolbaritem>
    </toolbarpalette>
    <toolbar id="mail-bar3" class="toolbar-primary chromeclass-toolbar"
          ...
    </toolbar>
  </toolbox>
</overlay>

Thanks,

Hello Jörg,

Thanks a lot for your response.

The overlay we are using is - mailWindowOverlay.xul. From the bug - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1446609, I believe this overlay will be removed soon or its already removed.

Here is our manifest snippet:

overlay        chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.xull chrome://xyz/content/xyz.xul

skin        xyz        classic        jar:chrome/xyz_3.jar!/content/xyz/skin/
style        chrome://global/content/customizeToolbar.xul        chrome://xyz/skin/xyz.css

And here is our xul code snippet:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<?xml-stylesheet href="chrome://xyz/skin/xyz.css" type="text/css"?>
<!DOCTYPE window SYSTEM "chrome://xyz/content/xyzOverlay.dtd">

<overlay xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul">

Jörg,

how does one find the current code (for 52 or 60) to verify whether a certain xul is still there?
Somewhere I found this repo: https://github.com/mozilla/releases-comm-central.git
but it doesn't show any tags or branches or similiar to indicate released versions, so it probably is the wrong one.

thanks,

Klaus

mailWindowOverlay.xul is still present at TB 60

https://dxr.mozilla.org/comm-esr60/source/mail/base/content/mailWindowOverlay.xul

but has since been removed like *all* overlays in TB.

customizeToolbar.xul is no longer global as we detailed here:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird/Add-ons_Guide_57#Changes_in_thunderbird59

What is <popup id="threadPaneContext"> and <popup id="mailContext">?

I can't see that at https://dxr.mozilla.org/comm-esr60/source/

The entire index? No, at least not that I know. Or the source code for local grepping?

You can pull the source from hg.mozilla.org/releases/comm-esr60.

Hello Jorg,

Firstly,Sorry for late response.

Secondly, regarding "Failed to load overlay from chrome" in Thunderbird 60 issue, I do not see the issue if I do following work around:

Let me explain when I see the issue-

I have xul files in a jar file. and I give the reference to it in chomre.manifest as below:

overlay chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.xul chrome://xyz/content/msktbirdOverlay.xul
content xyz jar:chrome/xyz_3.jar!/content/xyz/
content xyz jar:chrome/xyz_3.jar!/content/xyz/ contentaccessible=yes

However, if I unpack the files and keep the xul files under 'content' folder and modify the chome.manifest file as below, then I do not see the issue:

content xyz content/
skin xyz classic/1.0  content/

overlay chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.xul chrome://xyz/content/msktbirdOverlay.xul

Why is this happening only in Thunderbird 60 when its working fine in pre-Thunderbird 60?

Looking forward for hearing from you.

Thanks,
Regards,
Wilson

Sorry, I must pass on that question. I hope someone else has an answer.
Looks like something changed in loading overlays from a JAR file.

Jörg.

This still works for my add-on. The only difference I see is that I start
my chrome.manifest with the content line and only add the overlay lines
after that. Maybe the order is now important?

Hello Onno,

I tried moving overlay lines after that;but, still I am getting same error. Is your manifest working for Thunderbird add-on?

Is feasible, could you kindly add manifest lines here, so that I can refer those?

Hello Onno,

I think the issue is only with the binary component extension. Is yours legacy binary component extension?

On binary extensions, some interesting reading here:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1486221#c18

That's about how "Minimize to Tray" gets its binary installed.

Hello Jorg,

Thanks for sharing. This link is very informative. But, its not very clear that binary extensions will be supported from Thunderbird 63 and above. Do we need to wait for beta builds of Thunderbird 63 to check this?

Thanks,
