There are no plans to do this. It would require an almost ground-up
rewrite of the codebase, and the Thunderbird devs have their hands full
maintaining the desktop client.

Yes, but maybe it will be ported to Android one day, see
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680080

The Thunderbird Council received a request for support for a uni project to do such a port, but sadly no developer was available in close proximity of the requesting uni. Kent has more details.

I consider this to be a massive project that will essentially require  a
complete rewrite of the project, considering many issues that we do not
currently consider.

My personal plans for next year are to work with a team of developers at
WSR in Monroe to first teach them modern web technologies, then work
with them to develop a multi-platform prototype of the address book.
Platforms would include: 1) embedded in Thunderbird, 2) standalone
desktop app, 3) website, 4) progressive web app (usable in Android at
least). Think of this as the equivalent of Mozilla's Servo technology
demo for Rust as a browser platform, but using web technologies to
rewrite Thunderbird. There is another team at Clallam Bay I'll be
working with, but they are focused on C# these days so it might not be
possible to get them interested to work on the project as well. But
there are some interesting things happening in .Net Core these days, so
maybe we should test that as a platform as well.

I'm going to recycle my old brand name "Caspia" for the effort to work
with the guys at WSR and Clallam Bay, so if you want you can refer to
the effort by that name.

I would be very happy. I'm not a developer who can do it, just someone
currently using K9 on Android wishing I could use Thunderbird...
