mozilla/seamonkey build questions on Linux

Hi,

I used to build mozila while ago, and again recently I often build my
own nightly build from cvs, but I sometimes have some problems compiling
on Gentoo Linux, especially these few days.

I use gcc 4.1.0 and it fails to compile these days (a week ago, it's
ok).  According to mozilla's page,
http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Linux_Build_Prerequisites
gcc 3.2 or higher is required.  I know upgrade of version number of gcc
  means a big change.   So in principle is mozilla incompatible with
gcc-4.x.x?  Or does this error persist in any (unix-like) systems?
Error is as follows:

gmake[6]: Entering directory

To tell the truth, Gentoo's (my system) native compiler is gcc-3.4.5.
However compiling with this native compiler, mozilla/seamonkey freezes
at some homepages, for example, www.gmail.com consuming all cpu power.
I don't file this issue in bugzilla because this looks like a problem of
Gentoo's (may sound weird)... if I use another my hand-built compiler
(ie, now gcc-4.1.0) mozilla works perfectly....until recently :)

So now I'm making gcc/g++ 3.4.6 with original GNU source.

I don't find a similar post in this newsgroup, so I post here.

Thanks in advance!

OT, BTW, somehow enigmail's gpg signature looks corrupt for this post
(id is correct), though for email it's fine...

Looks like "xlib" isn't supported as toolkit... am I correct?  Changing
it to gtk2, mozilla is compiled successfully.

Well... I thought it was supposed to compile, but it's true, gtk2 is a
much better choice.

hmmm....
I've been using gtk2, but I found trivial problems with gtk2 and gtk, so
I tried xlib.

gtk2 has a problem when I move the cursor in the url field, it cannot be
moved with ^A,^F,^B,^E as in emacs.   It's possible with gtk.
However, gtk has a problem in Japanese font.....(sh*t!  I have to use
Japanese!)

Now gtk2 is the best to me...

Thank you!!!!

That's a global GTK2 preference which you can set in your GTK2 configuration (it
would then apply to all GTK2 apps, not just Mozilla).

hmm  yes, you are right!  But I don't know how to change or set it.  I
mean, gnome-control-center won't allow me to set those...  If it's
possible with all gtk2 apps, it's much better.

   http://neugierig.org/content/gtk2/

has directions.  As do a whole slew of web pages gotten by searching for "gtk2
emacs key bindings" on Google.

It used to support that, it's unfortunate that they removed it :-(

oops!!

I tried it; put this in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 in vain...

gtk-key-theme-name = "Emacs"

how can I enable it?  I think I should subscribe to gnome-gtk list.

I've got a reply in gtk-list and this works for me.  Put a line in
~/.gtkrc-2.0:

include "/usr/share/themes/Emacs/gtk-2.0-key/gtkrc"

and surely it works for me.

Thanks!

AFAIK you have to run gnome-settings-daemon if you only set in
gconf-editor (I might be wrong), but I don't want gnome-settings-daemon
to run when not using Gnome at all.

Thanks!  To my shame, I've never used gconf-editor.  I don't know what
options I have in each field for theme, but I guess it's one of the
subdirectories in /usr/share/themes directories.  Actually I found my
~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/interface was rewritten by gconf-editor and now looks

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<gconf>
        <entry name="gtk_key_theme" mtime="1142436036" type="string">
                <stringvalue>Emacs</stringvalue>
        </entry>
        <entry name="icon_theme" mtime="1135008128" type="string">
                <stringvalue>Crux</stringvalue>
        </entry>
        <entry name="gtk_theme" mtime="1135008164" type="string">
                <stringvalue>Metal</stringvalue>
        </entry>
</gconf>

This should be the correct solution.
