handling RSS mime types

Nic James Ferrier
Does anyone know if it's possible to tell mozilla to handle
application/rss+xml natively?

Really what I want to be able to do is set mozilla to alias
application/rss+xml as application/xml (which it does handle
natively).

Am I being really dumb about this and there's a simple way staring me
in the face?

If you mean in terms of what happens when that MIME type is loaded in the
content area, you could write a tiny little extension to do that...

There is a bug on this, which should be rather easy to fix, just that
nobody does it. I bet one could call it a "good first bug",
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=256084

I don't really understand how that bug report is related to this
problem. The problem I am talking about is one of front line content
negotiation. When I navigate to a resource that does not identify
itself by uri .extension the mime type is used and the mime type
mappings in mozilla aren't flexible enough.

Really, I want to be able to say to the mime type handler:

  application/xml+rss == application/xml

Note that you can't simply bind the RSS and RDF and all the other
sub-XML types to xml inside mozilla because the user might *want* to
map them to some external application.

So is my understanding correct? Does there need to be some way of
aliasing content types for the purposes of handling?
