What is the main Firefox newsgroup?

Bobby-6
Can someone tell me the most popular Firefox newsgroup?

I'm new to this browser and I'm looking for some help. There seems to be
lots of Mozilla NGs, no dedicated FF NGs and I'm confused about which one(s)
to subscribe to.

Cheers.

Bobby

Right now, the Firefox user support newsgroup is on the secure server
secnews.netscape.com.
For more info see: <http://ilias.ca/#Forums>

There will be a new official Firefox user support newsgroup created
soon, so watch watch the one on secnews.netscape.com for an announcement.

It is.  The secnews.netscape.com is available to anyone with an news
application.  And its spam free.  Whose bright idea -- its been that
way way before you even had the thought to get on the internet.

But it isn't accessible apparently.  I am running Tbird 1.5rc2. The
account "secnews.netscape.com" has the server set to
"secnews.netscape.com", port 563, use SSL.  Any attempt to use
"File|subscribe" fails.  I have no problem with my normal usenet
server.

No problems here.
When you say "File|subscribe" fails, do you not get a any list of groups
in the subscribe window? It should be noted that you need to restart
Thunderbird for the SSL/port563 settings to take affect.
Other than that, you can try the direct links at http://ilias.ca/#Forums

All I can get when attempting to access snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/

I tried again.  Never expected to need a restart.  Now I get a set
of classes (not selectable), without a list of groups.  Putting 'n'
alone in the search bar gives a herd of groups.  I then attempted
to subscribe to two (n.m.thunderbird and n.m.firefox).  So far so
good, but when I try to access them it asks for a user name (I gave
it something) and then a password (I gave it something), followed
by (I think) NNTP access failed.  I can't do that and leave the
message on the screen, and it isn't copy and patchable, so all I
have is my memory of the complaint.  Anyhow, no access.

This sort of nuisance is why things should be accessible on Usenet.

Your previous settings may be interfering. Create a test profile, and

Can you access non-secure (port 119) servers, like news.mozilla.org,
news.opera.com, or msnews.microsoft.com?

Thanks, I'll look at that later on.  Yes, I am accessing all the

Very nice clear site, Chris.

Just a little bit of weirdness with the OE setup that you might want to fold
into the description someday.

I had basically done this setup using the TB setup as an example, and
everything went fine except that I did not "download newsgroups" when the
box appeared immediately after setting up the account, but did that later by
clicking on the account in the Folders panel. [I think this is what I've
done with other servers with no problem.]  At that point it showed a
restricted set of newsgroups, seemingly the ones on news.mozilla.org -- some
netscape.dev.*, then jumps to netscape.public.*, etc.  No
netscape.mozilla.*, no firefox group.

However, when I removed the account and then set it up again and downloaded
groups at the point specified in your step 7, it worked fine, giving the
full list of groups.  I don't know what's going on, but it seems to be
important to do this download at that particular point.

Not only does my ISP not carry secnews.netscape.com, but Google Groups
never heard of it, either (and they carry virtually all the newsgroups,
except the porn pictures groups). Where did they come up with that name?
Also, I tried secnews.netscape.com on both http and https without finding
anything, either.

you don't access the newsgroups by way of your browser, but by way of
you email/news program.  You're right, your isp doesn't carry the
secnews newsgroups.  None do.  They are not accessible from any usenet
server.  Thats why Google hasn't heard of them; because they are a
private news server.

To access them, from your email/news program, you set up a NEW
account.  But instead of a new email account, you select a new
Newsgroup account.  The name of the server is secnews.netscape.com.
When you've finished setting it up, then you go back into the server
settings, and change the port to 563 and enable SSL.  Any body in the
world can access those groups.

Its just like the new user support newsgroups.  They aren't accessible
from any usenet server, or from your isp.  You can access them by
creating a new newsgroup account, and the server name is
news.mozilla.com OR news.mozilla.org.  Then for number is 119 and you
don't enable SSL.  These groups, too, are private.  However, you can
find them on googlegroups, but you can't post them.  You can only read
them.  Or atleast googlegroups are supposed to have them.

Don't bother with secnews.netscape.com now. The new official groups have
been created.
See <http://www.mozilla.org/support/#newsgroups> for direct links.

secnews is a entirely seperate news server, you subscribe to it
directly. It is NOT propagated to other servers.
