Thunderbird Valencian localization

Software Valencià
Hi all,
we translated Thunderbird 1.5 into Valencian a lot of years ago for some
versions but we focused our efforts into Firefox since 1.0.7 version
until now. Thunderbird is a software we use daily and we would like to
have it in Valencian language for us, and for our users.

The question is, is there some guide or howto for reusing or merge
Firefox's translated strings in the Thunderbird's translation so we can
start localization at advanced point? We prefer .po files if possible.

Many thanks!

Hi Sofware Valencià,

thank you very much for doing so, we are looking forward to seeing
Valencian in Thunderbird. I assume you have Firefox and hence Toolkit
also localized? Thunderbird uses the same Toolkit base.

Have you already done the translation on Pootle? If not, Dwayne can
probably help you enable it.

Afterwards, please file a bug like this one:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1117725
Once that is through the next steps will be like in this bug:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1117714

Instead of requesting feedback/needinfo from Mark, please request from me.

Thanks,
Philipp

(sorry for copy/pasting this, but the two requests currently on the
newsgroup are very similar :)

Re: Thunderbird Valencian localization

Software Valencià
Hi Philipp, Dwayne, Leandro,
We have worked always with original files (.properties and .dtd)
packaging them in .xpi file.

You can find our Firefox's translation here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/es/firefox/addon/valencian-racv-language-pac/

But we would like to work in an easiest way through Pootle or offline
with .po files to keep sync both projects.

Re: Thunderbird Valencian localization

Jeff Beatty
Hi all,

As always, thank you for your efforts to localize Mozilla projects. As with
Firefox, the chrome registry used in Thunderbird doesn't understand
anything beyond language and region tags. That's affecting us in
multi-locale scenarios (i.e., linux distros, fennec, addons). It doesn't
understand script tags (blocking Chinese) nor variants (blocking
Valencian). Unfortunately, these technical challenges will keep us from
being able to ship a Thunderbird localization in Valencian.

The new i18n/l10n infractructure for Firefox (l20n) will be coming by the
end of the year. This infrastructure actually resolves the issues with the
chrome registry, allowing us more flexibility with the definition of locale
codes for building localized versions of Firefox. Stay tuned to the mailing
list and blog as we announce when each phase of this transition takes place.

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Thunderbird Valencian localization

Michal Stanke-2
Hi all.

Is the Valencial l10n at least supported in our tools? Maybe we could
create at least a repository and set up Pontoon/Pootle as a tool, if the
team want to keep working on the localization and be ready to ship it
together with one of the first l20n releases.

Re: Thunderbird Valencian localization

Jeff Beatty
As for Pootle & Pontoon, I'm not sure to which level they support the BCP47
standard for locale codes. I know Pootle's locale mapping has become more
robust, but I don't know if that's to the point of being able to include
either scripts or variants into the locale code.

Hi,

Valencian is a variety of catalan and, since 2011, there is a team page
in the Mozilla wiki: https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Teams:ca-valencia

Hi,
Thanks for the file. We can indeed recover the translations from that
file, but since you are doing your translation offline before building
that XPI, we are wondering if you did use PO files to translate. If
yes, then it would be much easier for us to recover from PO files
rather than from XPI.

But if you don't have PO files, we can recover the translations from
the XPI without any problem.

> But we would like to work in an easiest way through Pootle or offline with
> .po files to keep sync both projects.

Pootle automatically allows to reuse translations done in other
projects in the same language. Previous translations are automatically
suggested by the translation memory. This helps translating faster and
keeping consistency across projects. So you don't necessarily have to
translate offline to reuse your work.

In any case we do allow to download the files for offline translation
(using PO format) and then upload back to Pootle.

Despite what some people commented about Mozilla not supporting
languages with variants (like Valencian) until l20n is enabled by end
of the year, we can enable now translation on Pootle. Translations
won't sent to Mozilla repositories, but when l20n is finally enabled
we will send the translations in a clean way for you. So you just need
to worry about translating.

Would you like to enable Firefox translation on Pootle as well? This
will allow to easily reuse the translations. Pootle also provides
automatic build of language packs for Firefox (only for Firefox) to
allow easy testing for your translation.

Our only concern is that since Mozilla is not supporting languages
with variants, this might not straightforward work for Valencian. But
given that you have managed to build your own language pack, we can
surely find out the way to get it working for Valencian.

Hoping to get quick response.

Bye

Hi Leandro,
we don't have the PO files but we would like to work with them from now
on, and on Pootle. Of course, enable both Firefox and Thunderbird
translations on Pootle and once finished we will try to build .xpi
languagepack for Thunderbird until l20n is enabled.

Thanks!

Hi Jeff,
we will wait for this new infrastructure to have full builds. For now we
will continue with XPI languagepacks.

Great.

We are starting the recovery in order to enable both Firefox and

Hi again,
we are still busy importing the translations for Valencia, but can you
please create a user for you in https://mozilla.locamotion.org/ and
tell us its username so we can grant you the rights for Valencian
language?

Thanks in advance

Hi again,
both Firefox and Thunderbird have been enabled:
https://mozilla.locamotion.org/ca-valencia/

We still need your username in order to grant you the rights on Valencian.

Re: Thunderbird Valencian localization

Wayne Mery
In reply to this post by Software Valencià
Hi Jeff. I imagine your comments about Thunderbird not understanding
script tags and variants are related to my questions posted a few
minutes ago as follow up to "Kabyle localization of Thunderbird and
Linghtning".

If you haven't already, it would be very helpful if can you comment on
what Firefox does for these two items, so that we can do the same for
Thunderbird.

Thanks
Wayne

Re: Thunderbird Valencian localization

Jeff Beatty
Hi Wayne,

Gecko doesn't play well with script and variant tags, which is a problem
that impacts both Thunderbird and Firefox.
