Spam in this group? Is that possible?

Balaco ocalaB
Two of the three previous messages I see in this group today, the
messsages sent at 2018.01.03 10:26 UTC and at 2018.01.03 10:28 UTC, seem
to be spam. Is that possible? Shouldn't this messages be filtered or
deleted by some admin? The messages very clearly state instructions to
help the spammers making more victims. And they may use this group to
make much more of them. So it is not hard to find other users here that,
like myself, should agree with those two messages being removed from
this group.

--
=
If this message and others are off-topic,
disconsider that part of it, or ask it to be
moved to another group. If someone replied
here, my opinion is that there is no problem
with that - a problem is something that is
     really rare, IMO.

moz.general is not moderated. I suppose someone could be asked to set up
spam filters on it every month or os. In the meantime, set your own
filters, or just delete the useless messages. That's what I do.

BTW the Italian moron is not spamming nowadays or is that either my
filters are doing its job very well or/and moderation is working as well.

How would I filter/delete when using USENET?
I run User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:51.0) Gecko/20100101
Firefox/51.0 SeaMonkey/2.48

You can set up filters on a newsgroup just like an email account.
Something like:

If From contains GerardJan mark as read.

The message will still be there but if, like I do, you simply advance
through the unread messages by pressing the space bar you'll never see it.

The same way you would filter the spam in the Mozilla newsgroups like
mozilla.general.

Easy with Thunderbird, which I use to access Usenet groups. There are
other news-readers, each of which has its advocates. Ask on a Linux group.

That's why I posted links on how to create filters.

Mine work like a charm. An occasional tweak is required.

Mebbe so, but you can create your own filters.

I used those on email years ago before Thunderbird got a proper spam
filter that learns.  They were cumbersome and not very effective.

Why can't the spam filter for email be used on Newsgroups also?

Maybe the Junk filter works for the mailing lists.

Not spam filters, Message Filters, as in Tools - Message Filters.

I tried the TB junk filters for a few weeks, diligently marking and
unmarking messages as junk.  It was just as big a nuisance to check the
'Junk' folder for not-junk messages as before, but the really annoying
thing was that one friend's messages (he used the MIT email server)
consistently ended up in the junk folder.

I subsequently disabled TB's automatic junk function, but apparently I
wasn't sufficiently thorough and the friend's mail was still classified
as junk.  I just disabled everything in every account having to do with
junk.  We'll see.

I've occasionally reset TB's trainable junk filter to avoid the false
positive problem. I've found that manually created filters work best if
set for From Contains.

You can't eliminate false positives, nor false negatives.
