Shortcuts bar, like Outlook

unfrostedpoptart
Hi.

I was wondering if Thunderbird had something like the Outlook (not
Outlook Express) Shortcuts Bar.  This is incredibly useful: it lets you
drag any mail folder to the Shortcut Bar so that you can easily get to
it, or drag messages to it, without digging through your folder
hierarchy every time.  The actual folder doesn't move - there's just a
shortcut to it. I have hundreds of nested folders, so this
saves tons of time.

I looked around the Thunderbird preferences (running 1.5 now) and the
Extensions web site, but didn't see anything.

Thanks,

 David

Hmmm... What's interesting about this is that this would be of more
interest to (former) Outlook users than perhaps to the rest of us, who
have just gotten used to Netscape Communicator's way of handling mail
folders (and so, have never really had a need for this functionality).

You might want to poke around Bugzilla to see if someone has filed an
RFE for this, or even enter one yourself. I took a brief peek, but
didn;t find anything specific (on non-Windows platforms, "shortcuts" can
be considered "aliases," "shadows," etc., so be sure to search on a few
variants for the sake of completeness.

Good luck, David. This does sound like it might be handy to have, though
as I say, as a long-time Communicator user on OS/2, and one who never
used Outlook or Outlook Express, I never really gave this much thought.

This is somewhat related to (really an extension of)

Also might look at:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=251296

I think this is a duplicate of that (a favourites list) --

Re: Shortcuts bar, like Outlook

I also realized that it is possible to save searches of messages in
pseudo-folders, which appear directly beneath the system-created folders
(at least in SeaMonkey). This could be a possible work-around
(admittedly, I haven't had a chance to review the two bugs you've
referenced, Ian).

Thanks for everyone's input.  I asked this on the Mozilla site
(http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=30) the other day.  I
very helpful guy put together an extension that does this!  He still
needs a little fine tuning, but it's great so far.  Check out this
thread for info: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=311755
