Question about severity / priority usage in bugzilla 2.20

Ralf Beckers
Hi,

we are using bugzilla to track several issues, and not only bugs. These
are for example enhancements, new features, documentation, tests, ...

Our product has some target milestones representing the next releases.

We like to have the severities similar to "blocking", "critical",
"normal", "non-critical".

How can I set up bugzilla to have the possibility to express that an bz
entry is an enhancement request and is blocking release "x" (this is
something a sales person or application engineer like to enter ;) ).

Using "enhancement" as severity seems to be a little strange to me,
because it can really block an release, but blocking or enhancement can
only be used mutual exclusive.

In fact I should use a severity incl. blocking, a class/type like "bug",
"new feature", "change request" or whatever, target milestones, and I do
not need priorities (noone of our engineers cares about the priorities
;) ).

Do you have similar problem and you have used/configured bugzilla in
another way, which could fit my needs, or have a clue how to realize the
class of entry problem?

Thanks a lot,
Ralf

In Bugzilla 2.20 the values of the priority and severity fields can be
configured using the web interface. Suggest to remove enhancement from
the severity field and changing the priority field to hold the type of
bug.
There is a parameter to allow anyone to choose the priority when
submitting a bug. What is left is renaming priority to 'Bugtype' in the
templates (and probably the fielddef in checksetup.pl so it is renamed
when you get a bugmail).

Sounds like a minimal solution, which would serve my needs.

How do others cope with defining blocking enhancements?

Thanks :),

You could always do what Mozilla does for this...flags.  If you go to https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ and look at some bugs, you'll see that some have a flag called Blocking2.20 or whatever version.  If the bug blocks that version, then the flag will be set.

we are using flags to mark on what branches (we have a branch for each
major release) the bug has been / needs to be fixed. This is because we
can't assign more than one version to a bug. The other alternative of
multiplying bugs also looked ugly. Using flags would mix this up.

Maybe there is another solution for the version/branch problem and then
the flags are free to use again :)
