New Pontoon feature: Notifications

Matjaz Horvat-2
Hi,

In the last couple of weeks we’ve been rolling out Pontoon
notifications, the top-voted feature of the Pontoon end-of-year
survey.

Read more about it on Mozilla l10n blog:
https://blog.mozilla.org/l10n/2017/05/04/stay-on-top-of-localization-with-pontoon-notifications/

We'd be very happy to hear your thoughts about the current
implementation and the next steps we should be taking.

Cheers,
Matjaž

Re: New Pontoon feature: Notifications

I use them every single time. And I mean single time (pun). Will tell you why. I use several tabs to work on different projects. Once opened the popup with notification entries is empty on subsequent page load (reload, f5). Then I should go to all notifications page and visualy filter (by date/ time) the ones I'm interrested - the last ones received and I just skimmed over.
All notifications page has a filter by project that I do not find usefull, but I see the potential usecases. Adding a filter by some time constrain say, last day/week, 3 days etc. will mitigate the described issue.
The link to the project page listing all the languages probably is usefull for drivers/project owners but for me is not. Quite the contrary. I expected to open the dashboard of that project in my locale.
When I saw "34 strings added" in the notification at first I wanted to click on that number and see them listed. Then realized that there is no such functionality.
For me the list of added strings and link to project dashboard in my locale from the notification will be the most usefull additions to the current implementation.

In reply to this post by Matjaz Horvat-2
+1, I agree with most of the comments to improve this new feature.

A few suggestions of the behaviour I'd expect:
- When I click on the project in the notification, I expect to jump into that project in my currently active locale.
- The notification list is empty after the first click on the bell, I'd expect to see the original list every time I click on the bell until I sign out.
- The "all notifications" page could highlight the same list of "new" notifications, again at least during the web session.

How long are the notifications kept? Are they deleted at some point? I find useful the most recent ones, but the older ones...

Regards,
Javier

Re: New Pontoon feature: Notifications

Matjaz Horvat-2
Hi all and thanks for the feedback, I really like your ideas!

I've filed two bugs for now:

Show latest notifications in notifications popup:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1363164

Notifications should link to localization dashboard:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1363165

Stoyan:

Linking to a selection of strings is currently not possible
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1324933), but once it
will be, we'll be able to make links more specific. I'm not sure I
understand the purpose of filtering notifications by time. They are
displayed in reverse time order (and you're interested in the latest
notifications only, right?).

Javier:

Notifications are kept for good at the moment. We'll see how that
behaves over time as we start sending notifications on more events.

I was describing a possible workaround for the short living last
notification entries in the popup. Still I prefer to work with short
lists rather than one huge.

Will it be possible to opt-out of notifications for given project?
Because if I fixed a typo once in a "wrong" project and will
automatically be subscribed to receive notifications. Not a big deal,
but probably valid use case.

Another nit. I find it convenient to visually distinguish the "due"
(Project due in N days) notifications and "updated" (Project updated
with N new strings) ones.

I like both of the ideas - the ability to opt out and visually
distinguishing notifications by type. Please file bugs, so we can
track them.
