Mozilla tune resets WPS

wolfi-3
Every so often, when I use Mozilla's Find-as-you-type "/" feature and the
search is not successful, I usually still hear the 'missed hit' tune and
then immediately after the WPS starts resetting itself.

In Popuplog.OS2 I then always find something like this:

Any ideas why this happens, or much better, how to fix it?

This has nothing to do with Mozilla directly (it just passes the sound
file %TEMP%/mozsound.wav on to the WPS). These entries point to Chris'
multimedia extension classes, so I would guess that somehow you have
screwed up your WPS setup.

I think the CWMM.DLL is part of some multimedia add-ons that chris w.
did a couple of years ago.  You might try reverting to the standard OS/2
multimedia setup and see what happens.

Or just disable the sound for "Find as you type."

To clarify Steve's point about disabling sound for typeaheadfind, the
prefs.js setting is:

accessibility.typeaheadfind.enablesound

Or, Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Keyboard Navigation | Find As You
Type - uncheck the appropriate box.

When Mozilla is running here for a while, it often causes strange effects,
which then either disappear completely or at least usually improve the
situation, after I exit/kill it and then restart it.

When I open my \systemp\TCPIP temp-file folder containing that wave file
on the WPS, I can double-click on it as often as I want, w/o experiencing
any problems.
The only thing to note is, that in the MB2 "Open" context menu, I only have
options for the 'OS/2 Systen Editor' and the 'Extended Editor', but this is
caused by one of XWP's settings, I would have to dig it up, but if my
recollection isn't too far off, then it's caused by 'Turbo Folders'.

So can it be, that (re-)starting that file from the WPS does no harm, but
most of the time, when the same is done from within Mozilla, while playing
wav-file messages for incoming new emails also doesn't casuse any problem?

Turning the sound off, works around the problem. I already tried it quite
some time ago when I ran into that oddity the first couple of times.

I just had an investigative moment and it made me wonder, why playing that
"missed hit" sound often works for the first 2 up to some 4 times and then
further misses, no matter if for new or the same search, often causing
that DLL to get hiccup and reset the WPS.

I was hoping, that one or the other also occasionally already came across
it at times and might already have found a reason for it.

W.A.G. When you access the file directly, the sound is played (or at
least initiated) on the WPS's primary thread.  However, when it is
opened by another process, it's started on a secondary thread.  This
is true not only for Mozilla but for any external process, e.g. REXX.
You might try writing a REXX script using SysOpenObject to play this
file.  If the WPS crashes after a few attempts, then CWMM isn't
thread-friendly.
