Linux Accessibility Developer - Austin, TX

Kate Orngard

CTG is looking for an experienced Linux Accessibility Developer to join a key client team in Austin.  If the following fits your background and skills, you are encouraged to apply.

This is a long term W2 contract position (minimum term = 12 months).  Our client is looking for the following:

CTG is looking for a skilled developer to develop high quality code in core Mozilla and Firefox technologies on Linux, which will ultimately enable Firefox for users with disabilities. For example, users who are blind may use Firefox products via a screen reader, which communicates via text-to-speech or a Braille display. Users with partial vision may use Firefox with a screen magnifier. Users who are unable to use a standard keyboard or mouse may use on onscreen keyboard with eye tracking. Such interoperability with assistive technology tools requires Firefox to support ATK, an API intended to support accessibility on the Gnome desktop.

The work falls mainly into four areas:
1) Keyboard navigation fixes in the core engine,
2) Fixes in the XUL widget toolkit, developed in XBL,
3) User interface fixes in the front end XUL and Javascript, and
4) Accessibility API support work in mozilla/accessible (ATK support).

Firefox accessibility on the Gnome desktop has an ambitious roadmap. Changes in screen readers, screen magnifiers and the relevant APIs will be occuring while we develop accessibility support. The team will have to work across time zones, against a tight schedule. Thus, very good technical and communication skills, and efficient work habits, will all be required.

Required Skills:

High proficiency in C++,
Moderate proficiency with web technologies such as HTML, CSS and Javascript
High profiiency with one or more of the following: Accessibility, Linux software development, the Mozilla codebase, the open source software development process.

It is desirable that this programmer also has knowledge of Gtk+, ATK, Bonobo, GAIL, ATK-Bridge, and ATSPI.
Very important -- the passion and drive to deliver a solution for users who require alternative means to access the web.
