Firefox Monitor: updates on localization

Francesco Lodolo [:flod]
Hi,

A few localizers asked in the past days about Firefox Monitor, and when
it would be localizable. We finally have some news.
https://monitor.firefox.com/

*System Add-on*
I've just exposed the strings for the Firefox add-on
https://pontoon.mozilla.org/projects/firefox-monitor-add-on/

It's a simple door-hanger that will be displayed in Firefox when you
open a website with known data breaches
https://screenshots.firefox.com/4C78ngactIOZOZ9P/puu.sh

Only a dozen locales are enabled at the moment, and the deadline is set
for October 31.

*Website*
We're close to getting the website ready for localization, hopefully it
will be completed before the end of the week [1].

There is currently a discussion around adding a page to inform the user
about Firefox Monitor and what it does, but it's unclear if it will be
part of the add-on or the website. Strings also need to be added to make
the emails sent by the website localizable.

As of now, the website's content is around 1200 words, but it's destined
to grow as soon as the remaining copy is finalized.

Feel free to opt-in in Pontoon if you want to localize Firefox Monitor
[2]. When enabling the project for the website, I'll enable all locales
already enabled for the add-on.

Francesco

That is exactly what I didn’t want to hear. Can you at least give an
idea on how big the workload will be for the Monitor website?

Thanks,

All the information I know is already in the email (currently around
1200 words).

I can't really predict how much copy or content is missing, and how that
will impact the final number of strings.

Re: Firefox Monitor: updates on localization

Francesco Lodolo [:flod]
In reply to this post by Francesco Lodolo [:flod]
I've just enabled the website on Pontoon
https://pontoon.mozilla.org/projects/firefox-monitor-website/

The development site should be updated at every commit, but we'll need
to see how that works with the frequency of commits from Pontoon:
https://fx-breach-alerts.herokuapp.com/

Also, right now automation is disabled because of GitHub issues [1].

The project contains 261 strings (1689 words). Content should be final
for the launch version, pending possible issues found during
localization and testing (e.g. hard-coded strings, issues with
formatting, etc.). I will follow up with instructions on how to test
emails in the coming days.

Please let us know if you find problems, either in the strings to
localize or in the dev website. All issues are tracked here
https://github.com/mozilla/blurts-server/issues

Re: Firefox Monitor: updates on localization

Michael 'Coce' Köhler
Hi Francesco,

The German translation is done but there are two issues:

I get warnings in two strings
<https://pontoon.mozilla.org/de/firefox-monitor-website/all-resources/?status=warnings&string=191979>
because it seems I can’t translate them completely. There’s no
localization field for „{no-breaches}“.

Similarly, there’s no field for „So far, so good“ here
<https://pontoon.mozilla.org/de/firefox-monitor-website/all-resources/?string=191849>
but there’s no warning, maybe because the string is translated elsewhere?

Do you know what’s wrong?

By the way, Google Translate works really well, I have to say. Many
times the translations require no change at all.

Regards,

Michael

Re: Firefox Monitor: updates on localization

Francesco Lodolo [:flod]
Looks like Pontoon is failing to display the "0" form
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1501163

In the meantime, you can work around it by switching to FTL mode, and
adding a [0] form manually. I'll try to fix these warnings myself in
case it's confusing.

Re: Firefox Monitor: updates on localization

Francesco Lodolo [:flod]
I spoke too soon, you can't switch to FTL advanced mode if there's a
warning (likely a different bug).

I fixed German by downloading the FTL file from the profile picture,
fixing it manually, and uploading it again. For the last example, I
left the string as a suggestion, since it needs a translation for "So
far, so good".

Feel free to ignore the warnings for now for other locales, I'll keep
an eye on these three strings and try to help on my side, while we
figure out how to fix it in Pontoon.

Re: Firefox Monitor: updates on localization

Francesco Lodolo [:flod]
Sorry for the multiple emails, but there's actually a way to switch to
Advanced Mode (click the green FTL in the left bottom corner [1]):
since the warning is about a missing reference to "-no-breaches", you
can temporarily copy that reference to one of the available plural
forms (e.g. one, other), switch to FTL Advanced Mode, and add the [0].

For example, German would look like this when switching

report-headline =
    { $breachCount ->
[one] Ihr Konto ist von { $breachCount } Datenleck betroffen.
*[other] Ihr Konto ist von { $breachCount } Datenlecks betroffen.
    }

You can add a [0] form like this:

report-headline =
    { $breachCount ->
        [0] some text
[one] Ihr Konto ist von { $breachCount } Datenleck betroffen.
*[other] Ihr Konto ist von { $breachCount } Datenlecks betroffen.
    }

If you switch back to the normal UI, the zero form will now be
available for translation as usual. Obviously, you can also type
directly your translation in Advanced Mode and save it.

Re: Firefox Monitor: updates on localization

Michael 'Coce' Köhler
Hi Francesco,

Thanks for your help. When I first tried it, I received a warning about
"expected token: ' '" (no idea what that meant), but when I used another
string as template it seemed to work and all three strings are translated.

I'm zh_CN translator. I'm very sorry, It is my negligence that causes the mistake.

I've fixed it, It should work fine now.

Re: Firefox Monitor: updates on localization

Francesco Lodolo [:flod]
No need to apologize, it's a bug in Pontoon, not your fault.

This morning I've manually added suggestions for a few locales and
sent notifications to them. I'll keep monitoring those strings in the
coming days as locales reach 100%.

Re: Firefox Monitor: updates on localization

Francesco Lodolo [:flod]
In reply to this post by Francesco Lodolo [:flod]
Quick follow-up: there is now a page on the DEV server that can be
used to test the email templates (it's also listed in the resources
for the project in Pontoon):
https://fx-breach-alerts.herokuapp.com/email-l10n

You can click on the menu on the right to see the different
variations. The menu itself is in English because this is page won't
be exposed on the production server, it's only available on DEV for
localization testing purposes.

Note that the localized version of the website will be launched mid
November, and the current production version has an obsolete copy even
for English.

Francesco

P.S. In the meantime, the bug involving [0] forms has also been fixed
in Pontoon.

Re: Firefox Monitor: updates on localization

Fjoerfoks
Hi Francesco,

2 remarks:
The name of the month within the mails is written with a starting capital,
which is not right for Dutch and Frisian.
This is also for the texts in Compromised data:,  but I guess we can change
that in data-classes.ftl

Kind regards,
Wim

Re: Firefox Monitor: updates on localization

Francesco Lodolo [:flod]
> The name of the month within the mails is written with a starting capital, which is not right for Dutch and Frisian.

These are coming from internationalization data.

Dutch is lowercase: Rapportdatum: 7 november 2018
CLDR: https://www.unicode.org/cldr/charts/34/summary/nl.html#1798

Frisian is uppercase: Rapportdatum: 7 Novimber 2018
https://www.unicode.org/cldr/charts/34/summary/fy.html#1475

There's no way to fix this, it needs to be reported upstream.

> This is also for the texts in Compromised data:,  but I guess we can change that in data-classes.ftl

Right. I'm not sure if they're used anywhere else (it doesn't look like it).
