Enabling more locales for Fenix

Delphine L
Hello localizers,

We are excited to announce that we are ready to start adding more locales
to Fenix. Since this product lives within the android-l10n project
<https://pontoon.mozilla.org/projects/android-l10n/> in Pontoon, I will
have to enable it for you, as you can not yet opt-in for just one product.
For those of you who may not know yet, android-l10n is a shared repository
that contains the unified English files from the Android projects
participating in this new l10n system - as well as the localized files for
them. Currently, android-l10n contains files and strings for Fenix browser
<https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/fenix>, Android Components
<https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/android-components/>, Firefox Reality
<https://github.com/MozillaReality/FirefoxReality/> and Lockwise for Android
<https://github.com/mozilla-lockwise/lockwise-android/>.

Please note that we still don’t have a locale switcher in place, so please
only request your locale if you are 100% sure that it is widely supported
on current Android devices (so, available under the list of “Languages”
section under Settings, that you can choose from the device).

If you are a manager or translator, you can request that your locale be
activated by filling out this form: https://forms.gle/dL7MFLUm3bHikkdn6

I will start adding the locales little by little once the replies start
coming in.

Thank you!

@bittin

This is not the Messenger it is a mailing list and that means there are
thousands of subscribers that you so excitedly spam. I doubt about any
one of those subscribers care what you do or did not do and those that
do care are notified even before your announcement here.

I find such behavior socially irresponsible and will call upon you and
other subscribers to refrain from such irrelevant posts.

Is there a way to request new language without google account?

I had to fudge something for the "URL to profile", there is no obvious
URL to a specific profile. If there is, perhaps the questionnaire should
point out where to find it.

The idea is to put your Pontoon profile URL, e.g.

I know what the *idea* is, I'm questioning whethere there are
non-Mozilla employees out there who know how to *find* it. I logged into
Pontoon and clicked on my profile and clicked around some more and all I
get as a URL is
https://pontoon.mozilla.org/profile/

So I have no idea where to get that thing below...

Hey Michael, did you read this:

Fenix localization
Please only request that your locale be added if you are 100% sure it is
supported on a recent Android device. Thank you.

Are you getting a bit ahead of yourself here? No Welsh or Gaelic
(Scotland) on Oreo.
Get to the back of the queue and wait for the language switcher!
But they knew they'd need a language switcher, from the off...
Oh...

I know re the switcher, I'm facepalming like I'm a flag in a force 7
these days but re Android I'm getting conflicting reports to be honest,
it seems to depend (still) very much on the manufacturer, not so much
the version of Android. Should work on my LineageOS device either way.
But thanks for headsup.

Re: Enabling more locales for Fenix

Delphine L
@Стоян: In your specific case, I will gladly "bypass" the current process
and add the locale for you.

Concerning the in-app locale switcher: please let's all assume good
intentions here.
The Fenix dev team is a very small team, and have a lot of features to
implement and deal with.
A language switcher is planned for sure, and it should be in the works
during Q3. This discussion is happening around android-components, that way
we can build upon it for our future products - and in the future this means
an in-app locale switcher can be implemented from the start (or at least,
much earlier on).
Our team (l10n-drivers) has always been very vocal and has advocated for
this in-app switcher right the moment that a Product team comes to us with
an Android request.
At the end of the day however, Product team is the decision-maker - not
l10n-drivers. We can advise and push for this - which is what we've always
done - but that's pretty much it.
In any case, once this is part of android-components, this should solve the
current problem going forward.

thanks for your patience and understanding,
Delphine

Hello localizers,

I've started adding the first batch of locales (the ones I received last
week):  https://pontoon.mozilla.org/projects/android-l10n/
More will be added soon, as I see there have been more requests over this
week.

Thanks!

Re: Enabling more locales for Fenix

Gabriela Montagu-2
Hello Delphine.

I just filled the form to ask for the es-AR locale.

I checked my 2 Android devices, both include Spanish (Argentina). I also
asked Marcia to check her Android Q device, it includes it too, so I
suppose it won't be a problem.

I asked Marcelo (enzomatrix) first of course because he is a manager! He
agreed  it would be a good idea!

Best regards,
Gabriela
