Did Mozilla finally kill this group?

Mozilla - General mailing list
Haven't seen a post here since Frank Sinatra on the 8th. Did Mozilla
finally shut it down?

Not unless we have special dispensation to keep posting.  I blame
facebook.  Or maybe everybody has switched to Chrome and doesn't care
about mozilla any more.  Or being busy over the holidays.

Real shame.

Lots of killed messages here, certainly - but nearly all from one person.

While not entirely, this group has been more action when topics of
Firefox features and customizations were posted and/or other interesting
topics on technology were offered as discussion seeds. Then, once the
discussion reach a critical mass, then it was primed for splitter
off-topic subject like top-post vs. bottom-posting, acceptable number of
sig lines, plain-text vs. html formats and Franky, Walt Disney and
Elvis being spies.

Much of the Firefox fervor has been sapped away once XUL/XPCOM was
de-supported. Similarly, technological articles anymore focus on adding
another camera or display screen type to smartphones or the latest
spy-laden IoT device.

Long and short of it, interesting technology is in a funk.

The serious activities are taking place on these two newsgroups:

mozilla.support.firefox
mozilla.support.thunderbird

If you were looking for a place to socialise and/or chit-chat then this
NG is still operational or you could go to Linux newsgroup where they
discuss almost anything as long as it is NOT related to Linux or FF.
You can discuss Donald Trump and/or Brexit on those newsgroups.

Also, you can go to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Instagram where it is
still very active talking about rubbish.

But that one special person *has* occasionally posted a helpful post, so
I haven't killfiled him!!

But, as I'm not really interested in Israeli news, or what music he may
have been listening to some time ago, it's been some time since I've
really seen some useful, interesting, posts here!!

Normally, I don't even see them. I used Dialog to mark them "ignore" and
"markread" and they don't ever show. However, as killfiles were mentioned,
I had a look. I have a one click view which shows "all" and, whilst the
message bodies ot the killed files have not been downloaded at all, the
headers are visible.

The technology is "mature". So now marketing features are more important
than technical improvements. Happens alla da time. Eg, in a new car
review I read last year, the major praise was for the "thoughtful
provision of cup holders" in every possible spot. The reviewer was real
driver, not a PR hack.

The first sure sign that computer technology was moving into
consumer-appliance territory was the demise of BYTE magazine.

IMO, the only serious topic these days is security. Eg:

a) This a.m. heard on the news that a Spencer Bridges pleaded guilty to
mischief after hacking into the local university's database. He was
amazed and disturbed at how easy it was, and reported his results to the
U management, who promptly alerted the police.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sudbury/laurentian-university-privacy-breach-court-guilty-plea-1.4980569

b) One of my relatives got a call from "Skype" telling her she had a
security breach, etc. She "let them into my computer...", but was put
off by their request for $49. I advised her to take her machine to her
tech) and have him scan and clean her it.

c) [add your own anecdote ;-)]
Best,

What?  Elvis was a spy?  Damn, I missed that.  Everybody knew about

People aren't as enraged any more.  We're resigned to GUIs getting worse
and worse.  We used to complain.  We had PASSION.  Now we just sulk.

I really miss the "good ol' days" when folks used to get excited about
stuff! When "JoeS", "The Purple Hippo", "Jay Garcia" and others I can't
remember, used to see who could develop the neatest scripts to animate
things and argue about "top posting" vs "bottom posting" etc.. But I
guess as Thomas Wolfe said, "You Can't Go Home Again"!  :-(
