Compose message in a tab

WaltS48-3
A user brought this up on mozillaZine today.

<http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=3027873>

Looking at bug 449299, Comment 189
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=449299#c189> I have a
question and am posting here.

Now that we will have the ability to create an Event in a tab in
Lightning. Is there anyway to use that code as a base for fixing bug 449299?

I don't see why not, and as long as the option remains to compose/reply
in a new window, I have no problem with it being implemented.

Just don't take away my choice to keep these opening in a new window,
please.

Fine with me. In my Thunderbird 52.0b4, the Options/Preferences >
Calendar General tab has a check box for "Edit events and tasks in a tab
instead of in a dialog window".

I don't see why something similar couldn't be in the Composition General
tab. I'll suggest "Compose messages in a tab instead of in a window".

Sounds good to me, but... should there be a separate pref for Replies,
or shoudl the one pref control both? Since I wouldn't want it, I'm not
sure if others who would want to compose new messages in a a tab might
have a reason to treat replies differently (have them open in a new window).

Extremely doubtful. The compose code in Thunderbird largely dates back
to the days before tabs, and the implementation (as I understand it)
makes it fairly complex to just "drop it in" to a tab. I know everyone
working on Thunderbird would like to support the option of composing in
a tab, but it'll take a while to get there.
