[ANN] Release of Bugzilla 4.2 and 4.0.5

Dave Lawrence
Today the Bugzilla Project is proud to announce the release of
the next major version of Bugzilla: 4.2! It has been a year since
we released Bugzilla 4.0 in February of 2011, and this new major release
comes with several new features and improvements. This release contains
major improvements to search, support for SQLite, improved WebServices,
HTML email, and lots of other enhancements. In addition, we are also
releasing a security-only update for the 4.0.x series.

Bugzilla 4.2 is our best release yet, and we hope that you enjoy
and appreciate the results of this past year of hard work by our
entirely-volunteer community.

Bugzilla 4.0.5 is a security only update for the 4.0 branch.

Please note that the release of Bugzilla 4.2 also marks End Of Life
for the Bugzilla 3.4 series, meaning that there will be no further
updates for the 3.4.x series, even if there are serious security issues
found in that series. We recommend that all installations running the
3.4 series upgrade as soon as possible to 4.2.

Is there a good doc to describe moving from 4.0.4 to 4.2?   Using Bazar or manual process?

Just to make everybody clear about this: Bugzilla 4.2 is only available
using bzr (Bazaar). We stopped mirroring new branches to CVS, meaning
that 4.0.x is the very last branch to still be mirrored to CVS.

So if you want Bugzilla 4.0.5, you can still use CVS. If you want
Bugzilla 4.2, you MUST use bzr. If you want to upgrade from 4.0 or older
to 4.2, you cannot use CVS. You will have to do a checkout using bzr,
and reapply your customizations if you have any.

It used to be the case that the official Bugzilla documentation talked
only about CVS, and you had to look at a wiki page for details on using
bzr. I assume that's no longer the case?

Yesterday, I added a section to http://www.bugzilla.org/news/#release42
with the comment I made here, and I also updated
http://www.bugzilla.org/download/#bzr to be very clear about this too
(for instance, I removed the documentation about how to do a fresh
install using CVS, to force people to use bzr for new installations).
And I also filed https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=730032 to
fix the documentation to stop mentioning CVS.

The documentation in 4.2 states nothing about CVS not being useful anymore
as of 4.2, and further doesn't say a word about proper procedures in bzr
going forward.

http://www.bugzilla.org/docs/4.2/en/html/upgrade.html

Today I find a (small and new for today) note on the news page stating that cvs
upgrade isn't possible starting with 4.2. The download page has also been updated.

http://www.bugzilla.org/news/#release42
http://www.bugzilla.org/download/#bzr

The releasenotes says nothing about this change, but I find another small cvs
inconcistency in the upgrade section: "If you update via CVS or bzr, [...]".

http://www.bugzilla.org/releases/4.2/release-notes.html

As a very happy cvs upgrade user, with many flawless and painless bz upgrades
I must say that I'm sorry to see that there is no proper migration path from
cvs upgrades to bzr. The rock solid upgrade procedures has previously been a
strong point for bugzilla. And it really must be with a complex and rarely
touched system like this.

I can understand that the bugzilla developers do not want to maintain cvs
support for ever, but leaving us users with (IMHO) scattered documentation,
no upgrade path and little notice doesn't lend to a great user experience.

I think that if the 4.2 final docs still recommend using CVS, and 4.2 is
not actually in CVS, then something has gone seriously wrong with the
order in which these events have happened.

LpSolit: how much work would it be to import 4.2 into CVS and do this
transition for 4.4, when we have our documentation story in order?

I agree with the sentiment. It would be excellent if there were a
specific page on migrating an installation from bzr to CVS while
preserving all data (e.g. data/params, old charts etc.) and
customizations. We should produce one. Fredrik: would you be interested
in helping with this?

The download page clearly states for almost 2 years that CVS
instructions are for 3.x and older, and that Bugzilla 4.x uses bzr. We
won't change this. The website clearly states that you must use bzr if
you want 4.2 (or download the 4.2 tarball). We are going to fix the
documentation for 4.2.1.

I'm sorry, I'm really no Perl hacker and my full bazaar experience so far
consists of 5 minutes trying to clone (branch) the bugzilla 4.2 repo.

I'd be happy to help evaluate any instructions if someone wrote them though.
I have, and can recreate, a cvs install of 4.0.5 with local changes on a kvm
instance here. I'd be happy to run through and offer feedback on a cvs to
bzr upgrade.

If you need any help, there are detailed instructions here:

        https://wiki.mozilla.org/Bugzilla:Bzr#Checking_Code_Out_of_Bzr

> I'd be happy to help evaluate any instructions if someone wrote them though.

Mostly the upgrade instructions would be very similar to the tarball
upgrade instructions, if you don't have customizations to port forward.
Just pretend like the bzr checkout is something you just un-tarballed.

If you have customizations to port forward, the instructions would be
similar to this:

        https://wiki.mozilla.org/Bugzilla:Bzr:Porting_Forward_Customizations

Except instead of the "bzr bundle" step, you'd be doing a "cvs diff
-Nru > customizations.diff" to get all your customizations from the
version you were using CVS with. (And also remember to copy over new
files, because they won't be in the cvs diff.) And instead of the "bzr
merge" you'd be doing "patch -p0 -i ~/customizations.diff".
